The Dutch graphic artist was famous for the dimensional illusions he created in his woodcuts and lithographs, and that theme is carried out in many of his tessellations as well. These movements are termed rigid motions and symmetries.Ī good place to start the study of tessellations is with the work of M. The topic of tessellations belongs to a field in mathematics called transformational geometry, which is a study of the ways objects can be moved while retaining the same shape and size. We will explore how tessellations are created and experiment with making some of our own as well. There are countless designs that may be classified as regular tessellations, and they all have one thing in common-their patterns repeat and cover the plane. These two-dimensional designs are called regular (or periodic) tessellations. It may be a simple hexagon-shaped floor tile, or a complex pattern composed of several different motifs. Repeated patterns are found in architecture, fabric, floor tiles, wall patterns, rug patterns, and many unexpected places as well. In this section, we will focus on patterns that do repeat. What's interesting about this design is that although it uses only two shapes over and over, there is no repeating pattern. Notice that there are two types of shapes used throughout the pattern: smaller green parallelograms and larger blue parallelograms. The illustration shown above (Figure 10.101) is an unusual pattern called a Penrose tiling. Apply translations, rotations, and reflections.\)Īfter completing this section, you should be able to: size: Influences the ending shape of the gradient by taking the shape value and instructing where the gradient should end based on the center of the shape. For example, an element that is a perfect square would be a great match for circle whereas anything rectangular is ripe for ellipse. We can omit this value and the notation will measure the element’s side lengths to determine whether one value better matches the situation. Since we’re talking about radial gradients, the shapes are limited to being circular in nature.
She began studying acting, singing, and dancing at age 17 under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in Manhattan. Louise got her first role at age two after being in an ad for her father's candy store. She attended Miami University in Ohio after high school. The name Louise was allegedly added during her senior year in high school when she mentioned to her drama teacher that she was the only girl in the class without a middle name, and he suggested it. Tina's father, Joseph Blacker, was a candy store owner in Brooklyn and later an accountant. She was an only child and was raised by her mother Sylvia Horn (née Myers) Blacker, a fashion model. By the time she was four years old, her parents had divorced. Despite this, Louise continued to work after "Gilligan" ended, co-starring with Dean Martin in the swinging action flick "The Wrecking Crew" (1968), taking a supporting role in the seminal sci-fi thriller "The Stepford Wives" (1975), and appearing in Robert Altman's teen comedy "O.C. Louise was the only cast member who refused to return for any of the post-series TV movies, and often claimed that the show ruined her career, as she was no longer seen as a serious actress. She fought often with producers, especially creator Sherwood Schwartz, over screen time (she originally thought Ginger was supposed to be the main character) and creative freedom. Though the show was beloved by fans, Louise's tenure on the show was not a happy one. The tale of a disparate bunch of castaways attempting to survive on an abandoned desert island, with comedic results, Ginger, the movie star, was originally written as a sharp-tongued diva, but Louise instead played her as a sexed up bombshell, a la Marilyn Monroe or Jayne Mansfield. However, Louise would book the role that came to define her when she was cast as Ginger Grant on "Gilligan's Island" (CBS, 1964-67). She was soon appearing in all sorts of pictures, ranging from film noir ("The Trap" ), to westerns ("The Hangman" and "Day of the Outlaw" ) to beach party comedies ("For Those Who Think Young" ). Louise made her film debut at age 24, with the drama "God's Little Acre" (1958). She soon began booking work as a model, often as a pinup girl. After attending Miami University in Ohio, Louise returned to New York, where she studied acting under the instruction of Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. Louise earned her nom de fame when she complained to her high school drama teacher that she was the only girl in class who didn't have a middle name. Her parents divorced when she was 4, and she was raised mostly by her mother. Born Tina Blacker on Februin New York City to a candy store owner father and a fashion model mother, Louise began her screen career very early, appearing in an ad for her father's candy store at the age of 2. Tina Louise was an American actress who carved out a nearly six-decade long career for herself in film in television, though to her chagrin, she was mainly remembered for playing a glamorous movie star stranded on a desert island in one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The increased static pressure increased the peak temperature by about 5☌ and TAL by about 10 sec. The oven was reset to the baseline parameters and the pressure varied from 0.7 to 1.3 IWC. Peak temperature and TAL increased with the higher zone temperature settings and the uniformity decreased ( Table 5). The oven was reset to the baseline parameters, and the temperatures in zones 6 and 7 were increased and decreased by 10☌. The increased belt speed lowered the peak temperature and TAL, and slightly decreased the temperature uniformity at the peak. Table 4 shows the peak temperature, TAL and uniformity data for each board. Belt speed was varied from 24 to 32 IPM with the static pressure and zone set points at the baseline settings. in the TAL between the two boards because of weight and board design.īelt speed. There was a difference of about 5☌ at the peak and 8 sec. Table 3 shows the peak temperature and TAL data for the boards. Figures 1 and 2 show the resultant profiles for the 100 and 230 g boards, respectively. The 100 and 230 g boards were run at the baseline operating parameters of 28 IPM, 1.0 IWC and zone 7 set points of 250☌. Data were gathered with a SlimKIC II profiler. High and low ranges were established for each of the variables, as outlined in Table 2. An additional run was performed with all variables at the high and low settings to see the combined effect. The plan was to individually vary each parameter (high and low) and record its effect on the TAL, peak temperature and uniformity of each board. A recipe that produced a Pb-free ramp-to-peak profile with a belt speed of 28 IPM and static pressure of 1.0 IWC was chosen as a baseline ( Table 1). ExperimentalĪ Pyramax 98 N reflow oven with edge rails, fine mesh belt, and closed loop pressure control was used for this experiment. Given the three possible adjustments, a study was undertaken to determine the effects varied belt speeds, static pressures and zone temperatures have on the peak temperature, time above liquidus (TAL) and temperature uniformity of a 100 and 230 g populated surface mount board. Some oven manufacturers have added high, medium and low fan speeds as an additional adjustment, and one manufacturer has a closed-loop pressure control. One is the zone set points and the other is belt speed. Thus, the importance of accurate recipes and precision oven control is amplified.Ĭonventional reflow ovens have two adjustments for profile development. Additional complications exist because the liquidus temperatures of the new solders require peak temperatures close to the point at which components are damaged. Solder paste manufacturers have developed profile parameters, but it remains the responsibility of the assembly engineer to find the correct control settings with a limited number of reflow oven adjustments. The change from eutectic to Pb-free solder has required new recipes for reflow ovens. Belt speed, zone temperatures and static pressure all impact peak temperature. These poses are usually linked into a series of hatha sequences, also known as a hatha flow. Many of the asanas used today are a variation on ancient asanas, which weren’t just poses, but also included mudras to attract and seal energy into the body and mind. With the definition of being a forceful yoga, hatha is the physical movement of the body in various ways, including asanas, mudras (hand gestures), and mantras, where voice is used for chanting. In the Western world, hatha is all about focusing on asanas, the many physical poses and postures that make up this discipline. Also included are other postures for a total of 84 different asanas. There are fifteen main poses listed in the book – both seated and standing poses. The text goes into detail about hatha yoga, including information about asanas, pranayama (breath), and chakras (energy centers of the body). The most well-known text that discusses hatha yoga is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, dated from the 15 th century. The balancing of the sun and moon that resides within each of us is done through hatha yoga postures, where each pose is intended to bring us harmony of the body, mind, and spirit. Hatha yoga is all about balancing the two opposites that make us a whole. The word hatha itself is composed of two Sanskrit words – Ha, which represents the sun. The word hatha in Sanskrit means “forceful” or “willful”, which translates to “a forceful yoga”. Most of yoga’s terminology is based on Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. Experiment with writing in different forms and tell us about it. Attend an online masterclass (like the ones BPA runs) and mention that. Join a writer’s workshop group and tell us about that. If you don’t have that kind of experience, share anything that tells us you’re serious. If you can, share what magazines your short fiction has been published in, the competitions you’ve been listed in or the creative writing courses you’ve completed. You’re not just someone who thinks they have a novel in them you take your craft seriously. The agent or judge also wants evidence that you are a writer. Did your job as a psychiatrist inspire the analysis of your antagonist’s motivation? Do you live in the idyllic town where the book is set? Have you studied the era of your historical novel? Share relevant details about yourself. And it’s true – no one else could write the book you’ve written. They especially want to know why you were the one person who could write this book. It’s the writing, not the writer, that’s important … but the agent or judge does want to know about you too. You could also explain why you think your novel aligns with what they describe in their wish list. The best way to make a connection and show you’ve done your research is to mention an author on the agent’s list who has a relevant readership. Some writers choose to open with this and others incorporate it into the later paragraphs. The letter should be targeted towards the literary agent or competition judge you’re writing to. (Check out agent Nelle Andrew’s advice on comparable titles.) In a short final paragraph, say what inspired you to write the book and offer some comparable titles. If you can do that in a couple of sentences, you might also mention one of the novel’s core turning points.Ĭover letters should describe the novel first, then the writer, then remind us of the novel at the end. Tell us who the protagonist is, what happens to upset the balance of their life, and what their goal is (presumably to restore said life balance!). Unlike the synopsis, it doesn’t need to tell the entire story, but it should be just more than the premise. It’s a good idea to follow this up with a one-paragraph description of the novel.
