Set became representative of all that was foreign and chaotic and evil. This is probably when Set became really vilified in Egyptian mythology, and some experts see the conflict between Osiris and his son Horus on one side against Set on the other as a propandized allegory for the ethnic wars between natives and immigrants in Egypt - Set and Osiris were brothers and both were kings, Set murdered Osiris and usurped his kingdom, then Osiris' son Horus avenged the murder. Ultimately, the indigenous Egyptians defeated the Hyksos Pharoahs and drove most if not all of the ethnic Hyksos out of Egypt. Its highly possible that Set's association with snakes came from his association with a fanatical king with the same name as the snake god. I haven't been able to tell whether the snake god or human pharoah came first or which was named after the other. Apepi bears the exact same name as the Egyptian snake god of evil, and both were later given the Greekified name "Apophis". One of the Hyksos Pharoahs, Apepi, was a particularly zealous Set worshiper. On only occurred much later, when Ashkenazi began breeding with Northern Europeans (but the biblical Esau and David, who came from that region, were described as having red hair).Īnyway, the Set-worshipping Hyksos eventually rose to power in Lower Egypt, establishing the Fifteenth Dynasty of Egypt. Possibly not coincidentally, red hair has become commonly associated with Ashkenazi Jews, who originated from the region of Canaan, although some geneticists think this associati Set became popularly known as a god of foreigners, and is often described as having red hair. Not much is known about the Hyksos (and the term changed in meaning over time, eventually referring to anyone from any part of Asia), but they were probably predominantly Canaanites originally. Although he was certainly known in Egypt prior to their arrival, he was heavily adopted by the immigrant Hyksos people who settled in Egypt, much to the annoyance of the natives. He morphed quite a bit in popular imagination over thousands of years of folklore. He was a god of storms and deserts and was fierce, but not necessarily evil. Set wasn't originally universally reviled as evil, nor was he particularly associated with snakes. Egyptology isn't my field, but I've done some research.
